The Tony Awards, better known as the Antoinette Perry Award for Excellence in Broadway Theatre, honours outstanding performances in live Broadway theatre.
The American Theatre Wing and the Broadway League deliver the honours each year at an event in Manhattan’s Midtown.
The honours are given out in recognition of outstanding work in Broadway shows. For regional productions, there is a separate award.
Non-competitive prizes, such as a Special Tony Award, the Tony Honors for Excellence in Theater, and the Isabelle Stevenson Award, are also given out.
According to the American Theatrical Critics Association, the Tony Awards are the equivalent of the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys of the New York theatre world.
