From 1966 until 2004, Khalifah ibn Zaid bin Sultan Al Nahyan was the first son of the ruler of Abu Dhabi and head of the Nahyan dynasty Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, who also served as president of the United Arab Emirates from 1971 to 2004.
Khalifah’s full name is Khalifah Ibn Zaid bin Sultan Al Nahyan Khalifah. One of the emirate’s most important cities was where Khalifa grew up and became his father’s official delegate to Al-Ain in 1966.
Prime Minister of Abu Dhabi, Khalifa, took office in July 1971, just a few months before the United Arab Emirates gained independence (a position later retitled chairman of Abu Dhabi Executive Council).
The immense oil wealth of the emirate was essential in his development, and he encouraged Abu Dhabi’s inhabitants to invest privately through credit schemes.
A decade later, he was elected head of the Supreme Petroleum Council of Abu Dhabi, a position he held until today.
When Khalifa’s father died in 2004, it was no surprise that he took over as president of the United Arab Emirates after serving as Abu Dhabi’s capable administrator and the emirate’s crown prince since 1969.
Around one-third of eligible voters were included in the Federal National Council’s advisory electoral college during his reign, and by 2015, the electoral college contained around one-half of the council’s members.

Her father, Suhail Faris Ghanim Ateish Al Mazrui, was a member of the board of directors of Dubai Investments for more than 20 years. Shamma is the daughter of this businessman.
Al Mazrui received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics with a concentration in Finance from New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD).
Shamma also spent a semester at New York City’s Stern School of Business.
She received her Master of Public Policy degree with honors from Oxford University’s Blavatnik School of Government in 2015.
