Teresa Berganza was a Spanish mezzo-soprano. She is most closely associated with roles such as Rossini’s Rosina and La Cenerentola, and Bizet’s Carmen admired for her technical virtuosity, musical intelligence, and beguiling stage presence.
In Joseph Losey’s 1979 Don Giovanni film, she played Zerlina. She took part in the opening ceremonies of the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona as well as the opening ceremonies of Expo ’92 in Seville.
In Madrid, Teresa Berganza was born. She received the first prize in singing in 1954 at the Madrid Royal Conservatory, where she studied piano and voice with Lola Rodrguez Aragón. In 1955, she made her stage debut in Madrid.
In 1957, at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Berganza made her operatic debut as Dorabella in Mozart’s Cos fan Tutte.
She made her La Scala debut in the same year. As Cherubino in Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro, and later as the title part in Rossini’s La Cenerentola, she made her Glyndebourne Festival debut in 1958.
As Cherubino at the Royal Opera House in 1959, Berganza made her debut performance as Rosina in Rossini’s Il Barbiere di Siviglia, which became one of her defining roles.
Repeated it when she returned to the Opernhaus Zürich as Charlotte in Massenet’s Werther, in 1979.
