Myles Straw is well aware of how many thefts Kyle Tucker has for the Astros. Tucker has stolen nine bases entering Monday’s game, one more than Straw.
Straw tied for second in the American League with 30 steals last season, significantly surpassing Tucker’s nine. Tucker is in third place this year, while Straw is in fourth.
Straw described him as “one of my best buddies.” “We’re having a friendly competition.”
Before Monday’s series opener against the Guardians, the Astros honored Straw with a video highlight reel on the scoreboard at Minute Maid Park.
Straw and Tucker reconnected before the game at one of their favorite brunch spots in the Houston area.
Straw got lost walking to the visitor’s clubhouse later in the day when he arrived at the ballpark.
Straw said, “It was a long trek.” “Bryan Shaw informed me that I was on the wrong track. This side of the park is new to me.”
With sluggers like Alex Bregman and Yordan Alvarez in the lineup, it’s easy to miss Tucker’s speed, as well as that of rookies like Jeremy Pena and Jose Siri.
According to Fangraphs.com, Straw is third in the league with 2.3 runs above average, while Siri and Tucker are tied for 15th with 1.6 runs above average.
