He was drafted in the 39th round of the 2004 amateur draft by the Atlanta Braves, despite the fact that he had no intention of signing because he had planned to attend college.

Doolittle went 3-2 with a 1.64 ERA and two saves in 22 games as a freshman in 2005, hitting .313/.391/.522. He was chosen a rookie All-American first baseman by Baseball America.

He was named to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference squad in 2006, but only as a starter, not as a first baseman.

He was also named Conference Player of the Year. In 91 innings, he went 11-2 with one save and a 2.38 ERA, striking out 108 batters while allowing 64 hits and 21 walks.

At the plate, he hit .324/.454/.458 with 54 walks and 28 strikeouts. Baseball America selected him as a second-team All-American utility guy behind Brad Lincoln.

He also played college baseball for the United States, hitting.239 and slugging.327.

Doolittle hit .301/.420/.465 as a junior and was 8-3 with a 2.40 ERA. He concluded his career as the school’s all-time leader in victories (22) and runs batted in (167).

He had the second-highest number of offensive walks (125) and the fourth-highest number of pitching strikeouts (243). He was named to the All-Conference first team once more.
