Yadiel Hernandez is a Cuban professional baseball outfielder for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in the Cuban National Series for Matanzas.
His professional baseball career began in 2009 with the Cocodrilos. Hernández decamped to the United States with Cuban national teammate Luis Yander La O in June 2015 while the two were in North Carolina for a game against American collegiate baseball players after hitting.369 for Matanzas in the 2014–15 Cuban National Series.
In April 2016, Hernández was declared eligible to join a Major League Baseball organization. The Washington Nationals, who aren’t known to be particularly interested in Cuban players, signed him to a minor league contract in September 2016 and paid him a signing bonus of $200,000 for his services.
Hernández was promoted to Class-AAA after two seasons with the Class-AA Harrisburg Senators. On May 9, 2019, while playing for the Fresno Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League, he hit his first professional grand slam.
Fresno’s Dakota Bacus and he were both selected to play in the 2019 Triple-A All-Star Game in Kansas City.
