Josh Palacios is the brother of Richie Palacios and the nephew of major leaguer Rey Palacios.
He moved to Houston, TX to play for San Jacinto College and was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the 31st round of the 2014 amateur draft.
He turned down their offer and continued his career at Auburn University, where he was picked again in the fourth round of the 2016 amateur draft by the Toronto Blue Jays.
He spent 2020 at the team’s alternate training location after three seasons in the Jays’ organization, but he did not have an opportunity to play anywhere.
He subsequently admitted that this was not altogether a terrible thing because he was able to spend more time honing his approach at the plate and practicing stealing bases without the constant pressure of needing to put up numbers.
With Toronto signing top free agent George Springer in the off-season to add to an already strong group of outfielders that includes Teoscar Hernandez, Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and a very good spare outfielder in Jonathan Davis, he was expecting to spend all or most of 2021 in the minor leagues.
