Nelson Ramón Cruz Martnez Jr. is a Dominican-American professional baseball designated hitter and right fielder who currently plays for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball.
He was born on July 1, 1980. (MLB). He began his career in Major League Baseball with the Milwaukee Brewers and went on to play for the Texas Rangers, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle Mariners, Minnesota Twins, and Tampa Bay Rays in the past. Cruz has made it to the MLB All-Star Game seven times.
In recognition of his powerful hitting, he has been honoured with two Edgar Martinez Awards and four Silver Slugger Awards.
Cruz played his first game in the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2005. Prior to that, he had signed with the New York Mets organization in 1998.
In 2009, he had his breakout season with the Texas Rangers, when he blasted a career-high 33 home runs. Cruz was a member of the Rangers team that competed in the World Series in both 2010 and 2011, and he was honoured as the Most Valuable Player of the American League Championship Series in 2011.
Cruz was handed a fifty-game suspension by Major League Baseball on August 5, 2013, due to his role in the Biogenesis baseball controversy.
As a member of the Baltimore Orioles in 2014, he led all of the big leagues with 40 home runs, a career-high for him. When he was playing for the Seattle Mariners in 2017, he had 119 runs batted in, which was more than anybody else in the American League (AL)
In the 2010s, Cruz was the only player to hit more home runs than he did with 346. This was the most number of home runs hit by any player during that decade.
Cruz was honoured with the Marvin Miller Man of the Year Award and the Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award at the ESPYs in 2020 as a result of the work that he had done in the community.
The following year, in 2021, he was presented with the Roberto Clemente Award.
