Anthony Kay’s native team, the New York Mets, selected pitcher Anthony Kay twice.
Long Island native, he was originally selected in the 29th round of the 2013 amateur draft out of high school, and then again in Compensation Round A of the 2016 amateur selection with the 31st overall choice out of the University of Connecticut, earned as compensation for the free agency of Daniel Murphy.
After fellow pitcher Justin Dunn, who was selected with the #19 pick in the first round proper, he was the Mets’ second pick that year. That second time around, he signed with the Mets.
Anthony had to wait a year to make his professional debut after undergoing Tommy John surgery in the fall of 2016 and missing the entire 2017 season rehabilitating.
In 2018, he was assigned to the South Atlantic League’s Columbia Fireflies, where he went 4-4 with a 4.54 ERA in 13 starts.
On July 3rd, he was promoted to the Florida State League’s St. Lucie Mets, where he made another 10 starts, going 3-7 with a 3.88 ERA.
In 23 starts, he was 7-11 with a 4.26 ERA, 122 2/3 innings pitched, 124 hits allowed, 49 walks, and 123 strikeouts.
