Baseball pitcher Yusei Kikuchi of the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball (MLB) is of Japanese descent (MLB). Kikuchi Yusei, was born on June 17, 1991, in, Japan,
formerly played in Major League Baseball for the Seattle Mariners and in Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) for the Saitama Seibu Lions.
In 2009, Kikuchi’s fastball was timed at 154 km/h (96 mph) while he was still a high school pitcher. Controversy erupted when it was discovered that Kikuchi was considering avoiding the Japanese amateur draft in order to play in the Nippon Professional Baseball League (NPB).
The Boston Red Sox and the Texas Rangers were among the teams interested in signing Kikuchi. ” It would have been a first for a Japanese high school athlete to skip the domestic amateur draft in order to play in Major League Baseball.
During the national high school invitational in April, Kikuchi aided Hanamaki Higashi to a second-place finish and the semifinals of the national championships in August.
Before the draft, NPB requested that Kikuchi not get an offer from any major league clubs, so that the chances of Japanese teams, who are not permitted to make offers before the draft, would be evened out.
