The New York Yankees’ scouting director, Damon Oppenheimer, saw Phelps when visiting Notre Dame to scout Kyle Weiland, Phelps’ teammate.
The Yankees selected Phelps in the 14th round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft on Oppenheimer’s advice.
Phelps was selected for the Eastern League All-Star Game in 2010. In 2011, he was a member of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees, the New York Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.
Phelps was selected as the Minor League Pitcher of the Year by the Yankees in 2010. After the 2011 season, he was added to the Yankees’ 40-man roster to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft.
In 2012, Phelps was named to the Yankees’ Opening Day roster. He was promoted to the starting rotation on April 29, 2012, to replace the underperforming Freddy Garcia.
Before the swap, Phelps was 0–0 with a 3.57 ERA in six games. After two starts for the Yankees, he was moved back to the bullpen when Andy Pettitte was promoted.
Phelps was demoted to Triple-A on June 14, 2012, after David Robertson was activated from the disabled list (DL).
When Pettitte and CC Sabathia were placed on the disabled list due to injury, Phelps returned to the squad as a starter.
Phelps gave up 5 runs (4 earned) in the first inning of a game against the New York Mets on May 29, 2013, and only lasted 13 pitches.
(At the new Yankee Stadium, it was the shortest outing for any Yankees starting pitcher.) He was placed on the 15-day injured list on July 6, 2013, owing to a right forearm injury.
Phelps was placed on the 60-day disabled list on August 15, 2013. He was reactivated from the 60-day disabled list on September 14, 2013.
Phelps went 5-5 with a 4.38 ERA in 113 innings pitched with 92 strikeouts and 42 walks in 32 games (17 starts) in 2014.
