There were a number of reasons why the Cincinnati Reds elected not to sign Collins, who was drafted in the 27th round in 2013. He was a member of the University of Miami Hurricanes baseball team throughout his undergraduate years.
He played with the Cotuit Kettleers of the Cape Cod Baseball League after the 2015 season. The junior year of Collins’ career saw him hit for a career-high average of 363, with 16 home runs and 59 RBIs, as well as a school-record 78 walks.
In 2016, the Chicago White Sox drafted Collins in the 10th round of the MLB draft. With the Arizona League White Sox, he made his professional debut and was honoured as an All-Star by the Carolina League.
