Alejandro Kirk surprised again in 2021, beating over McGuire for the Jays’ backup catcher spot on Opening Day, with Danny Jansen as the starter.
In a 13-5 triumph over the Atlanta Braves on April 30th, he hit his first two home runs of the season.
Jansen was still the better defensive catcher and the presumed starter, but Kirk was batting so much better than him that he was at risk of losing his position.
He was forced to abandon the following day’s game due to a hip flexor injury and was placed on the disabled list. He was out for about two and a half months before returning on July 23rd.
On September 7th, he hit two home runs in a 5-1 win over the New York Yankees, this time off Gerrit Cole and Cay Holmes.
By then, he’d also formed a strong bond with Robbie Ray, who was selected the American League Pitcher of the Month in August after starting every game behind the plate alongside Alejandro.
His body type is similar to that of Willians Astudillo, a catcher who only strikes out on rare occasions and puts the ball in play to all fields.
He also looks suspiciously like Wally the Green Monster. Kirk, on the other hand, is regarded as a competent defensive catcher with excellent game-calling instincts.
