Santiago Roman Espinal is a Dominican professional baseball infielder who currently plays for the Toronto Blue Jays of Major League Baseball.
He was born on November 13, 1994, in the Dominican Republic (MLB). During the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, the Boston Red Sox selected him in the tenth round of available players.
The Dominican Republic is where Espinal was born and raised until he immigrated to the United States when he was 13 years old.
He spent all four of his high school years at Lyman High School in Longwood, Florida. After that, he relocated to New York, where he attended Penn Foster High School until he graduated.
Espinal received a scholarship to attend Miami Dade Collegiate and went there after attending Florida’s Seminole State College, where he played college baseball in 2016. In 2016, he graduated from Miami Dade College.
During the 2016 Major League Baseball draft, the Boston Red Sox selected Espinal in the 10th round, placing him 298th overall.
Espinal was sent to the Toronto Blue Jays on June 28, 2018, in exchange for the player Steve Pearce and financial considerations.
Following the conclusion of the 2018 regular season, he participated in the Arizona Fall League (AFL) with the Surprise Saguaros.
Espinal played for both the New Hampshire Fisher Cats and the Buffalo Bisons at Triple-A level in 2019. In 2021, he played in 92 games and had a batting line of.311/.376/.405 with 2 home runs, 17 RBIs, and 6 stolen bases.
