Lourdes Yunielki Gurriel Castillo Jr. is a Cuban professional baseball left fielder who currently plays for the Toronto Blue Jays in Major League Baseball. He was born on October 10, 1993.
Before leaving Cuba, he was a member of the Sancti Spiritus and Industriales baseball teams, both of which competed in the Cuban National Series.
After he defected, Gurriel was given a ranking that placed him among the best international prospects that were available. Yuli Gurriel, his brother, also signed with the Houston Astros after defecting and playing for them.
On September 21, 2018, both Lourdes and his brother created baseball history when they hit two home runs, becoming the first brothers to have multi-homer performances on the same day. Lourdes and his brother became the first to do it.
Between the years 2010 and 2016, Gurriel competed in the Cuban National Series. He was selected to compete for Cuba at the Central American and Caribbean Games in 2014, where he won the gold medal.
In November of 2015, Gurriel agreed to terms with the Toronto Blue Jays that would pay him $22 million over the course of seven years.
On March 17, 2017, he was sent to the Dunedin Blue Jays of the Advanced-A Florida State League to continue his baseball career.
Gurriel achieved the milestone by being the only rookie in the modern history of baseball to have 10 straight games with multiple hits.
Shoeless Joe Jackson, who debuted in 1911, was the most recent rookie to achieve this milestone. Due to pain in his left hamstring, Gurriel was taken out of action on September 25 and will not play again this season.
In 2019, he played in 57 games and had a batting average of.308 with 11 home runs and 33 RBIs. This performance earned him a spot as a finalist for the Gold Glove Award.
With 20 home runs in 84 games, he not only broke the club record for most grand slams in a season, but he also established the record for most home runs in a season.
