Ken Giles saved Game 1 of that series against the Yankees, but gave up a run in Game 2, and then gave up two runs in just a third of an inning in Game 4 to lose 6-4.
With that performance, he appeared to have lost manager A.J. Hinch’s confidence, as the skipper used a different strategy to close out games, using some of his starters for extended stretches in relief.
In the World Series, Giles pitched twice against the Los Angeles Dodgers, but he was ineffective both times, giving up a total of 5 runs in 1 2/3 innings.
So, while the Astros won the World Series in seven games, he failed in his own personal mission.
There were a lot of worries about Giles entering into the 2018 season because of his terrible performance in the 2017 postseason.
He pitched well in April, but his ERA in May was a dismal 7.88, and while he fared better in June, he was only given one save opportunity, which he converted, and his only decision was a loss.
However, on July 10th, he had a terrible effort against the Oakland Athletics, entering the game with a 4-0 lead and promptly giving up three straight singles before being replaced by Hector Rondon; all three runners eventually scored as Oakland tied the game before Houston won in extra innings.
How Much Does Ken Giles Make?
