Kenneth Robert Giles (born September 20, 1990) is a Seattle Mariners pitcher (MLB). Formerly with the Phillies, Astros, and Blue Jays.
Giles played baseball in high school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Giles was drafted out of high school by the Florida Marlins, but he attended Yavapai College instead. In 2011, the Phillies drafted him in the seventh round (241st overall).
Giles quickly advanced through the Phillies’ MiLB system, overcoming two oblique injuries to participate in 2014 spring training. Giles started the season in MiLB but was promoted to MLB on June 12. Giles finished fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting that season.
Giles began 2015 as the Phillies’ primary setup man, but when they traded their closer (Jonathan Papelbon), he became the closer. Giles is a power pitcher who combines his fastball and slider to achieve strong strikeout rates.
Giles was born in Albuquerque in 1990. He grew up playing baseball. Glenn, who never played baseball, pushed Ken to play while he was in pre-school. Giles played baseball at Rio Grande High School in Albuquerque, New Mexico, but he threw out runners rather than pitched. Besides baseball, he played football and basketball in college.
