Jarred Kelenic began the no-hitter against the Mariners on May 18 and went 0-for-44 with a slash line of 17 strikeouts during his only other appearance that month.
His batting average was .096 and his on-base percentage (OBP) and slugging percentage (SLG) were both below .200, so the Mariners sent him back to Tacoma on June 7th.
While playing for Tacoma’s Triple-A affiliate in the American League Futures Game in 2021, he rediscovered his ability to hit.
As soon as he came on in the game, he was promoted back to Seattle to start the second half of the season, having hit 1.008 OPS after being sent down, the second-highest mark in the minor leagues over that time frame (Luis Campusano, who also played in the Futures Game, hit 1.025).
Alex Rodriguez and Ken Griffey Jr. are the only other players in Mariners history to have accomplished this feat at such a young age: September 17th.
