Austin Lance Adams, a Major League Baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres, was born in America on May 5, 1991. He has previously played for both the Seattle Mariners and the Washington Nationals.
Adams was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the eighth round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2012. During the 2012 season, he made his professional debut while playing for the Orem Owlz in the Rookie Advanced division of the Pioneer League.
He played in the Midwest League’s Class A Burlington Bees in 2013 and the California League’s Class A Advanced Inland Empire 66ers in 2014.
He played for Inland Empire to start the 2015 campaign. During the course of the year, he was promoted to the Class AA Arkansas Travelers in the Texas League and the Class AAA Salt Lake Bees in the Pacific Coast League.
He played parts of the 2016 season for both the Class AA Arkansas Travelers and the Arizona League’s Rookie-level AZL Angels.
The Mariners dealt Dan Altavilla, Austin Nola, and Adams to the San Diego Padres on August 30, 2020, in exchange for Ty France, Taylor Trammell, Andrés Muoz, and Luis Torrens.
Adams’ 2021 MLB season was marred by control issues. On September 1, 2021, Adams becomes the first MLB pitcher in history to record 20 or more HBPs in a season with fewer than 50 IP. Adams is the only pitcher since 2004 to have struck out a batter 20 times or more.
He hit 2 batters during his 8-pitch performance, walked 1 hitter, gave up 1 hit, and recorded 0 strikes. As of September 1, 2021, he had pitched 45.2 innings during his 2021 season.
After 1923, Austin Adams becomes the first pitcher to record 23 or more hits by pitches in a season on September 12. On September 17, in the bottom of the eighth inning, he faced Yadier Molina of the St. Louis Cardinals and committed his final HBP of the year. Adams set a new mark for the live-ball era with 24 HBPs in the regular season.
Adams avoided salary arbitration after agreeing to a $0.925 million deal with the Padres on March 22, 2022.
