Michael Anthony Clevinger, an American pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball, was born on December 21, 1990. He was formerly a member of the Cleveland Indians.
Clevinger was chosen by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the fourth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball draft.
He pitched in eight games for the Cedar Rapids Kernels in 2012 after spending 2011 with the rookie-level Orem Owlz. He underwent surgery for an elbow reconstruction, and as a result, he pitched in three games in 2013.
On August 7, 2014, he was traded to the Cleveland Indians in exchange for Vinnie Pestano after pitching for two different lower league systems for the Angels in 2014.
With the Double-A Akron RubberDucks in 2015, Clevinger had a 9-8 record and a 2.73 earned run average (ERA). After the season, the Indians added him to their 40-man roster.
The San Diego Padres acquired Clevinger from the Indians on August 31, 2020, along with minor leaguers Gabriel Arias, Owen Miller, and Joey Cantillo and the players Greg Allen, Matt Waldron, and Austin Hedges.
Clevinger and the Padres came to terms on a two-year contract extension on November 15, 2020. The new terms call for Clevinger to earn $2 million in 2021 and $6.5 million in 2022 per year, plus a $3 million signing bonus.
Clevinger would require Tommy John surgery and miss the 2021 season, it was revealed on the same day. As he continued to rehabilitate from Tommy John surgery, Clevinger was put on the 60-day disabled list on February 18, 2021.
