Yu Darvish, also known as Farid Yu Darvishsefat, is a Japanese professional baseball pitcher for the San Diego Padres of Major League Baseball. He was born on August 16, 1986.
Darvish has also played for the Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Chicago Cubs in Major League Baseball, as well as the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters of Nippon Professional Baseball.
As a member of the Japanese national team competing internationally, Darvish pitched in the 2009 World Baseball Classic and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Before joining Major League Baseball in 2012, he was widely regarded as the best pitcher in Japanese professional baseball. Darvish was third in the American League (AL) Rookie of the Year voting during his debut MLB season.
The following year, he led the Major Leagues in strikeouts (277) and ended fourth in the AL in earned run average (ERA) (2.83), placing him second in the voting for the AL Cy Young Award.
In fewer innings worked than any other starting pitcher in MLB history, Darvish hit the 500 strikeout plateau on April 6, 2014.
