American Major League Baseball pitcher Joseph Anthony Musgrove, born on December 4, 1992, plays for the San Diego Padres. He had previously played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Houston Astros, and Toronto Blue Jays.
Musgrove was up in El Cajon, California, and at the age of seven, he started playing baseball competitions. During his junior year at Grossmont High School, which he helped lead to two state championship appearances, he made his debut as a star pitcher and batter.
Musgrove made the decision to sign with the Blue Jays after being selected by them in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft, forgoing his previous commitment to play baseball for San Diego State.
Musgrove was acquired by the Astros as part of a huge ten-player transaction midway through the 2012 season. Due to a string of injuries sustained there, his minor league career suffered, and he did not leave the Rookie League until 2014.
He started progressing through the Astros’ farm system in 2015, and the following year, he made his big league debut.
Musgrove was a member of the Astros squad that won the World Series in 2017. Musgrove was included in yet another significant deal involving the Astros and Pirates during that offseason.
Before being traded to his hometown Padres, he spent two years there. Musgrove pitched the Padres’ first no-hitter in their 52-year history on April 9, 2021.
