Jose Azocar of the Erie SeaWolves has been named the winner of the 2019 Eastern League Rookie of the Year Award, as announced by the Eastern League of Professional Baseball.
Azocar is making his Double-A start in Erie this season after hitting .297 with 50 RBIs and 53 runs scored in 109 games between the Midwest League’s West Michigan Whitecaps and the Florida State League’s Lakeland Tigers last season.
In 122 games with the SeaWolves this season, the 23-year-old has batted .284 (136-for-479) with 20 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, 56 RBIs, 62 runs scored, nine stolen bases, a .316 on-base percentage, and a .397 slugging percentage.
Azocar presently leads the league in hits (136), as well as batting average (.284, third), total bases (190, fourth), and runs scored (fourth) (62-tied 7th).
Jose has at least one hit in 86 of the SeaWolves’ games this season, and he has multiple hits in 38 of them, including four hits in a game against Reading on May 30th.
The 5’11”, 185-pound outfielder was named to the Eastern League All-Star Team in 2019 and started centerfield for the Western Division in the Eastern League All-Star Game in Richmond, going 1-for-4 with one RBI in the Western Division’s 5-0 triumph.
