The Oakland Athletics selected pitcher Daulton Jefferies with the 37th overall pick in the 2016 Competitive Balance Round A of the amateur draft.
AJ Puk, the Athletics’ first-round draft pick, was the team’s second choice. He was drafted by the Miami Marlins in the 39th round out of high school in 2013, but he declined to sign with them.
A shoulder injury that ended his senior season at the University of California, Berkeley undoubtedly would have cost him a higher draft position.
In his first five professional starts for the AZL Athletics in 2016, he went 0-5 with an ERA of 2.38 in 11 1/3 innings pitched.
After that, he would only throw seven more innings in 2017 for the Stockton Ports of the California League, and just two more innings in 2018 for the Tucson Diamondbacks of the Arizona League.
In June of 2018, he returned from Tommy John surgery, but was sidelined for the entire season after making his single appearance in a game.
