It took Martinez a year to recover from Tommy John surgery after he signed with the Padres as an 18-year-old out of Mexico in February 2015.
At the end of his second season, he was used in both the starting rotation and as a relief. It was in 2021 that he returned to the starting rotation and had his first taste of Double-A and Triple-A.
It was because of his success at the highest levels that the A’s acquired him in April’s deal for Sean Manaea, along with Erubiel Angeles and other players.
It’s a fastball with good carry and horizontal movement that the 6-foot-2 right-hander tosses loosely. His strongest pitch is a low-to-mid-80s changeup that has a good rating and dives toward the plate.
Even though his slider isn’t quite as advanced as the other two pitches, he manages to toss it with slightly above-average control.
It wasn’t until November of last year that Martinez was added to the 40-man roster.
His fastball-changeup combination might help him land a job in a big league bullpen, but further improvement of his slider could help him slot into the back end of a rotation.
