Thomas attended Colleyville Heritage High School. As a junior, he passed for 3,057 yards with 32 touchdowns and 4,154 yards with 51. Four-star prospect Thomas was one of his class’s top quarterbacks. He committed to play at Oklahoma. Thomas was picked 30th overall by the Yankees in 2013 but did not sign.
Oklahoma redshirted Thomas in 2013. 2014 redshirt freshman: 7 games, 3 starts. 30-of-66 throws for 342 yards, 2 TDs, 4 INTs. Thomas competed against Baker Mayfield and Trevor Knight in 2015. Thomas was Mayfield’s backup for three games. He abandoned football for baseball in January 2016.
Thomas was drafted 13th overall by the Dodgers in 2016. His professional debut was with the Arizona League Dodgers. He was promoted after seven games. Thomas won the Joe Bauman Home Run Award for hitting 19 home runs in 2016.
Thomas set single-game records for homers, RBIs, and total bases on August 3, 2017. Cody and teammate Carlos Rincon hit back-to-back HRs in the same inning, which has only happened once before (Boone/Cameron, Mariners 2002).
2018 Rancho Cucamonga Quakes postseason California League All-Star. He hit.285 with 19 homers and 87 RBI in 127 games. He started 2019 with the Tulsa Drillers and was named to the Texas League All-Star Game. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, Thomas did not play in 2020.
