Cortés was taken by the Baltimore Orioles in the 2017 Rule 5 draft from the Yankees organization. With the Orioles, Cortés fought for a starting or reliever place on the team’s Opening Day roster.

A bullpen pitcher for the Orioles, he made his major league debut on March 31 of this year. During the month of April, Josh Reddick hit a grand slam, and then Curtis Granderson walked with the bases loaded, then Josh Donaldson hit a grand slam.

The following day, the Orioles designated Cortés as a reliever. The Orioles traded Cortes to the Yankees on April 13, 2018.

 

Before returning to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he appeared in one game for Trenton before returning to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

 

After the regular season, Cortes participated in the Dominican Winter League with the Estrellas Orientales, where he developed his cut fastball technique.

Cortés was invited to spring training by the Yankees in 2019 as a non-roster player. He didn’t make the squad and was sent to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

On May 9, the Yankees elevated him to the majors. he won his first major league win on June 15, striking out seven batters and surrendering two earned runs in five innings.

As a result of Aaron Judge’s return from injury, he was sent down to Triple-A on June 21, 2019. In 33 games, he went 5-1 with a 5.67 ERA.
