Trevino played high school baseball at St. John Paul II High School in Corpus Christi, Texas. He also played college baseball for the Golden Eagles at Oral Roberts University. Before he graduated from the University, he played collegiate summer baseball in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox in 2013.
During the 2014 MLB draft, he was selected by the Texas Rangers in the sixth-round draft. He signed and began his professional career that year with the Spokane Indians of the Class A Short Season Northwest League. In 2015, he was assigned to the Hickory Crawdads of the Class A South Atlantic League. During the 2015 off-season, he played in the Arizona Fall League.
The Rangers assigned him in 2016 to play for the High Desert Mavericks of the Class A-Advanced California League where he won a minor league Gold Glove Award. The Rangers promoted him to the major leagues in June 2018 and he made his MLB debut with the Rangers on June 15, 2018, when they played a game against the Colorado Rockies. He was traded to the New York Yankees in April 2022.
