With the 79th overall pick in the 2009 MLB draft, the Chicago Cubs picked LeMahieu in the second round. After being drafted, he played for the Class A Midwest League’s Peoria Chiefs in 2009.
He batted .316 in 38 games, driving in 30 runs. He batted.314 with 73 runs batted in and 15 stolen bases in 135 games for the Daytona Cubs of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League in 2010, earning a post-season All-Star selection.
The Tennessee Smokies of the Class AA Southern League were LeMahieu’s first stop in 2011. When Jeff Baker was placed on the 15-day injured list on May 30 with a left groin strain, the Cubs elevated LeMahieu to the major leagues.
LeMahieu made his major league debut on that day, pinch-hitting for John Grabow and grounding into a double play. In a 12–7 loss to the Houston Astros, he did not finish the game.
In June, the Cubs reassigned LeMahieu to the PCL’s Iowa Cubs, a Class AAA team. He was named a MiLB.com Organization All-Star for the 2011 season after returning to the major leagues in September.
In 2014, LeMahieu married his wife, Jordan. They split their time between Birmingham, Michigan, and New York City.
