Judge was a three-sport star while attending Linden High School. He participated in sports as a center for the basketball team, a wide receiver for the football team, and a pitcher and first baseman for the baseball team.

In football, he set a school record with 17 touchdowns, and in hoops, he was the team’s scoring leader (18.2).

He played baseball for the Linden High School squad that advanced to the Division III playoffs of the California Interscholastic Federation.

Several institutions, including Notre Dame, Stanford, and UCLA, recruited Judge to play tight end in football, but he preferred baseball.

He was chosen by the Oakland Athletics in the 31st round of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, but he decided to attend California State University, Fresno (Fresno State) and play baseball for the Fresno State Bulldogs in the Western Athletic Conference instead (WAC).

Judge played on a Fresno State squad in 2011 that won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Tournament, qualified for the NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament, and shared the regular season WAC championship.

He was designated a Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger.
