Sonny Gray is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Minnesota Twins of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played for the Oakland Athletics, New York Yankees, and Cincinnati Reds.
Gray received his education at Vanderbilt University and represented that institution’s baseball team during his time there as a collegiate athlete. Gray was chosen by the Athletics in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft in 2011.
He was selected as an MLB All-Star in 2015 and made his debut in the Major League Baseball in 2013. In 2014, he was awarded the American League Pitcher of the Month Award twice.
Gray was traded to the Reds before the start of the 2019 season after being acquired by the Yankees in 2017.
Gray was born in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, to Cindy and Jesse Gray. Gray and his family resided in Murfreesboro up until the summer before Gray’s eighth-grade year, when they relocated to Smyrna, Tennessee. Gray attended school in Smyrna.
During Gray’s first year of high school, his father was killed in a vehicle accident. This occurred just around the same time that Gray began playing baseball for Smyrna High School.
