Thielbar was an All-State basketball player in high school (averaging 23 points per game) and an All-Conference pitcher in baseball as a senior with a 9-0, 0.69 ERA.

He was 3-4 with a 6.26 ERA as a collegiate freshman. He improved to 7-3, 4.15 the next season. As a junior, he dropped to 5-4, 5.94, and in his senior year, he went 5-8, 5.44.

He set school marks for starts (44), innings (274), strikeouts (196), and victories (four) (20). In the amateur draft of 2009, the Milwaukee Brewers selected him in the 18th round. Harvey Kuenn, Jr. was the scout.

 

Caleb began the 2009 season with the AZL Brewers, where he pitched well (6-1, 1.59, 46 K, 7 BB in 45 1/3 IP) and earned a promotion to the Helena Brewers (0 R in 1 2/3 IP).

He was tied for top in the Arizona League in wins and ERA with Pil-joon Jang (.45 ahead of runner-up Cameron Lamb). Despite his performance, Roberto Feliciano was named the All-Star lefty reliever for the Arizona League.

Thielbar’s 2010 season with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (0-2, 3 Sv, 5.60 in 3 G) and Helena Brewers was less successful (3.68 ERA in 9 G).

In the winter of that year, Milwaukee cut him. Thielbar joined with the St. Paul Saints, an independent team, and was an excellent middle reliever in 2011. (4-3, 2.21 in 46 G, 1.09 WHIP, 67 K in 57 IP).

The Minnesota Twins, who were in the area, took notice and signed him.
