The son of Yolanda Maloy and former baseball player Tom Gordon, Nick was born in the United States on October 24, 1995, in Avon Park, Florida. He participated in amateur baseball at Olympia High School in Orlando, Florida. He was chosen by the Minnesota Twins in the first round of the 2016 MLB Draft.
When he decided to sign with the Twins, he was given a signing bonus of $3.851 million. He made his professional debut that year with the Elizabethton Twins. For the 2015 minor league season, he was assigned to play for the Cedar Rapids Kernels. In 2016, he joined the Fort Myers Miracle. The twins chose him to participate in 2017 with the Chattanooga Lookouts.
