American outfielder Mark Contreras plays for the Minnesota Twins in Major League Baseball. In 2022, he made his MLB debut. Baseball was Contreras’ sport throughout his time at the University of California, Riverside.
California native Contreras attended Canyon Springs High School while growing up in Moreno Valley. He played on the varsity baseball team, where they won four straight Inland Valley League titles.
For four seasons, Contreras competed in college baseball for the UC Riverside Highlanders. His .332 hitting average and 14 doubles earned him a spot on the second team of the Big West Conference.
As a senior, Contreras was chosen to the first team of the Big West and led the team with a batting average of .366 and an on-base percentage of .427.
The Minnesota Twins selected Contreras in the ninth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball draft. At the start of the 2019 season, he was assigned to the Fort Myer Miracle.
Later that year, he was promoted to the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos and was recognized as a minor league Gold Glove Award winner.
Prior to being promoted to the Triple-A St. Paul Saints, Contreras spent the first 19 games of the 2021 season with the Double-A Wichita Wind Surge.
On May 10, 2022, Contreras was added to the Twins’ major league roster. On May 11, he made his Major League debut, coming on as Byron Buxton’s defensive substitute when the game resumed after a rain delay.
