The deadline for Major League Baseball organizations to add eligible players to their 40-man rosters in order to shield them from the Rule 5 Draft was today.
A lot of teams in the league took advantage of this chance to get some of their top prospects one step closer to the top level of the game by adding them to the major league squad.
However, the Milwaukee Brewers were not one of those groups. Mark Mathias was removed from the roster and no new players were added to the 40-man roster before today’s deadline by David Stearns and his brain trust.
Prior to the 2020 season, Mathias, 27, was acquired by the Brewers in a minor transaction. That year, he made his major league debut for Milwaukee and played in 16 games while batting .278/.278/.361 over 36 plate appearances.
He was unable to play baseball in 2021 at any level, as a ruptured labrum during Spring Training kept him out of action for the entire regular season.
Even though there were a number of MLB Pipeline’s top-30 ranked eligible prospects that the Brewers could have protected, they eventually chose against doing so.
That implies that they aren’t overly concerned about losing any of the players they left unprotected, whether it be because they don’t consider those players to be MLB-ready (a Rule 5 draftee must spend the entire following season on the 26-man roster) or because they don’t ultimately see those players filling important roles in the major leagues.
The player with the highest rating who was left unprotected was Korry Howell, who was ranked at number 15.
However, Howell, who turned 23 this year and just this year made it to Double-A, hit .244/.349/.455 with 132 strikeouts in 97 games between high-A and Double-A in 2021.
Carlos Rodriguez (#22), Tristen Lutz (#29), and Victor Castaneda (#30) are some of the other top talents that are still up for grabs.
Lucas Erceg, Weston Wilson, Caden Lemons, Max Lazar, Luke Barker, Ernesto Martinez, David Fry, and Noah Zavolas are among the notable unprotected players.
