De La Cruz was signed by the Houston Astros as an international free agent on September 24, 2013. He was given an amount of $170,000 as a signing bonus. That year, he made his professional debut after he was assigned to play with the Dominican Summer League Astros.
For the 2015 minor league season, De La Cruz spent it with the Gulf Coast League Astros. He played for both the Greeneville Astros and the Tri-City Valley Cats in the 2016 season where he recorded .239/.331/.396/.727 with three home runs and 18 RBIs for both teams.
