Griffin Canning is an American professional baseball pitcher for the Los Angeles Angels of Major League Baseball (MLB). He played college baseball at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Canning attended Rancho Santa Margarita’s Santa Margarita Catholic High School. As a pitcher, he competed on the school’s baseball team. An 11-3 record with an earned run average of 1.51 earned him the Orange County Register Pitcher of the Year award in his senior year.

Santa Margarita won the 2014 California Interscholastic Federation SS Division I Championship under his leadership, pitching a one-hitter with 11 strikeouts and only two singles allowed in his last game.

After being selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 38th round of the 2015 MLB Draft, Canning choose not to sign and instead played for the UCLA Bruins in collegiate baseball.

As a freshman at UCLA in 2015, Canning appeared in 15 games and started 11 of them. He had a record of 7-1 with a 2.97 ERA and 66 strikeouts. He rose to the position of primary starter for UCLA as a sophomore.

A 3.70 ERA and 95 strikeouts over 15 starts put him at 5–8. In 2017, Canning returned to UCLA’s starting rotation as the team’s ace. A 7–4 record with a 2.34 earned run average and 140 strikeouts were the results of his 17 appearances.

Griffin Canning is unable to throw at the moment, and there is no schedule available for when he will be able to resume his throwing program.

The right-hander has indicated that he wants to make a comeback this season, but on May 16 he tried to play catch and suffered an injury that prevented him from doing so.
