He was born in Isla de la Juventud in Cuba. He is 1.88 m tall. As an amateur player, Raisel played for the Isla de la Juventud team in the Cuban National Series and also played for the Cuban national baseball team. He was part of the 2013 World Baseball Classic and 2013 World Port Tournament.
In 2013, he tried to leave Cuba but he was caught and detained. Later on in the year, he was able to defect from Cuba and settled in Haiti. The Cincinnati Reds, in June 2014, signed him on a seven-year contract worth $27 million.
