He threw a complete-game no-hitter against Terrebonne High School as a sophomore.

He subsequently went to Tulane University, where he majored in graphic design and played baseball for the Tulane Green Wave from freshman to junior year when the Toronto Blue Jays picked him.

He had a 4.37 ERA and 36 strikeouts in 35 innings as a freshman with the Green Wave. He pitched a flawless inning of relief on April 26, 2008, and had a 5.66 ERA in 472/3 innings as a sophomore.

He played collegiate summer baseball with the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League after the 2008 season. He had thrown 571/3 innings before being drafted in his junior year.
