Josh was born in Hollywood in Florida to parents Ivan and Tricia James on March 8, 1993. He grew up in his birth town and had his high school baseball career at South Broward High School in Hollywood. He was undrafted after high school so he enrolled at Barry University in Miami Shored also in Florida to play college baseball.
He later transferred to Western Oklahoma State College which happens to be an NJCAA DII college located in Altus, Oklahoma.
