Lance played baseball as an amateur in high school at Jesuit High School in Tampa, Florida. He was named the Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year in 2012. During the 2012 MLB draft, the Houston Astros drafted him in the first round of the draft in the 41st overall selection. He signed with them and earned $2.5 million as a signing bonus. He made his professional debut the following season after he was assigned to play for the Quad Cities River Bandits of the Class A Midwest League where he won the Midwest League championship.
In 2014, the Astros promoted him to play with the Lancaster JetHawks of the Class A-Advanced California League. He helped the JetHawks to become the 2014 California League champions. He spent the 2015 season with the Corpus Christi Hooks of the Class AA Texas League.
Lance made his MLB debut on May 18 2015 the team. He did not play a game in the 2019 season as he had a torn UCL in his right elbow and had to undergo a Tommy John surgery. In March 2021, Lance signed a five-year contract extension worth $85 million with the Astros. The contract included a $3.5 million signing bonus.
