In the gloomy clubhouse, Parker Mushinski found a secluded spot and sat down. It was a 7-2 defeat for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys on Friday night. Mickey Storey found Mushinski to be a source of good news despite the circumstances.
After hearing what Mushinski had to tell him, “I don’t think I stopped crying for a period of time,” Mushinski remarked, with a grin.
On Saturday, the Astros called up Mushinski from Sugar Land to make his big league debut.
Left-handed reliever Ryan Pressly, 26, has been placed on the injured list with a right knee injury and has been replaced on Houston’s active roster by the 26-year-old lefty.
Astros assistant general manager Andrew Ball said, “He’s been throwing the ball pretty well in Triple-A.
“I know it’s only the beginning of the season, but he’s been looking quite good both on the field and in practice,” says the coach. According to the instructors, he was ready to accept the challenge.”
While Baker has always advocated for having two lefthanders in the bullpen, the promotion of Mushinski is a surprise. During spring training, the team signed Zac Rosscup and Adam Morgan to minor league contracts.
Although both pitchers have extensive major league experience, the team went with Mushinski.
Since the three-batter rule was implemented, Morgan has continued to work on getting righties out. It was a close call between Rosscup and Mushinski, but in the end, we decided on Mushinski.
He’s been with the group long enough that we’ve gotten to know him better than we do the others.
