Ryan was born on December 15, 1988, in Dallas, Texas. He was born to Jan Pressly and Tom Pressly (dead). Ryan played high school baseball at the American Heritage Academy in Carrollton, Texas. He later transferred to Edward S. Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas during his senior year in high school.
Ryan had plans of going to play college baseball for the Texas Tech Red Raiders baseball team at Texas Tech University but chose to sign with the Boston Red Sox team when they drafted him in the 11th round of the 2007 MLB Draft. He was given a $100,000 signing bonus after he signed with the team.
Ryan made his professional debut with the Red Sox and played for them for five years till the Minnesota Twins picked him from the Red Sox in the 2012 Rule 5 draft. The Red Sox promoted him to the majors in April 2014 and he made his MLB debut on April 4 2014.
In July 2018, he was traded to the Houston Astros. The Astros signed him on a two-year contract extension worth $17.5 million at the beginning of the 2019 season.
