Jhoulys Chacin had no urge to toss a baseball last summer for the first time in his memory. He did make an exception for one person, however, and the Rockies are reaping the rewards as a result.
Prior to Opening Day, Chacin was signed as an occasional long reliever.
Rockies relief pitcher Chacin (2-1, 5.34 ERA) is taking advantage of an increase in velocity and pure stuff from rest and a lighter innings load to pitch critical late-game innings.
As a bonus, he is the team’s most seasoned player and one of the most well-liked members of the squad. Also, the Rockies can thank a 5-year-old.
After just two outings, the Braves placed Chacin on the DL on August 1. In the previous year, Chacin had been let go by the Brewers, Red Sox, and Twins.
He had started Game 7 of the 2018 World Series for the Brewers against the Dodgers with a trip to the World Series on the line (during the pandemic).
Exhausted by it all, Chacin was ready to give up on it all. He wasn’t ready to retire, but he was worn out by the constant job uncertainty. As a result, he rejected offers from other organizations.
“I somewhat lost the love for baseball a little bit,” he confessed. Dominic, Chacón’s son, was waiting for him when he returned home with his ball.
