Butler studied at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. After redshirting his first season, Butler became a prominent member of the Vanderbilt Commodores’ defense. Over the course of his four seasons with Vanderbilt, Butler amassed 113 total tackles, 10 sacks, two blocked PATs, and one defensive touchdown.

Butler became an undrafted free agent and signed with the New England Patriots on May 5, 2017. He made an impression at training camp and the preseason that summer, earning a spot on the 53-man roster for the Patriots.

He played 21 snaps and registered a tackle in the Patriots’ first regular-season home game against the Kansas City Chiefs. Losing 42–27, the Patriots. In their 41-33 defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LII, which they won, Butler made one tackle for the Patriots.
