Houser was drafted 69th overall in the second round of the 2011 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft by the Houston Astros. Houser had played baseball with Dylan Bundy and Archie Bradley before high school, and they had been taken earlier in the draft.

Houser signed a contract with Houston three days after being picked, and was assigned to the Rookie-level Gulf Coast League (GCL) Astros. He had previously committed to play collegiate baseball for the Oklahoma Sooners.

Houser was promoted to the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League, the Astros’ other Rookie ball team, after going 1–2 with a 4.03 ERA and 25 strikeouts in six GCL games.

Houser pitched for both teams in his debut professional season, going 2–4 with a 4.31 ERA and 44 strikeouts in 12 games and 48 innings pitched. Houser pitched for Greeneville for the whole 2012 season, going 3–4 with a 4.19 ERA and 54 strikeouts in 58 innings.

Houser pitched for the Tri-City ValleyCats in 2013, going 0–4 with a 3.42 ERA in 14 games (nine starts), and the Quad Cities River Bandits in 2014, going 5–6 with a 4.14 ERA in 25 games (17 starts).

He joined the Lancaster JetHawks in 2015 and was later promoted to the Corpus Christi Hooks.
