Martinez joined the Padres as an 18-year-old out of Mexico in February 2015, but Tommy John surgery the following year put a stop to his progress.
He didn’t make it to full-season ball until 2018 when he spent two seasons splitting time as a starter and reliever.
In his first taste of both Double-A and Triple-A in 2021, he pitched back into the rotation and posted a 3.38 ERA with 122 strikeouts in 125 innings.
The A’s acquired him, along with Erubiel Angeles, in the April transaction for Sean Manaea because of his success at the highest levels.
With a fastball that boasts good carry and horizontal movement, the 6-foot-2 right-hander tosses with a fluid motion and sits between 92 and 96 mph.
His finest pitch is a good changeup in the low-to-mid-80s that dips as it approaches the plate. He also has a mid-80s slider, which isn’t as advanced as the other two but has slightly better control.
Martinez was added to the 40-man roster last November, despite being a late bloomer.
His slider could help him slot into the back end of a rotation, but his fastball-changeup combination could help him land a spot in a big-league bullpen right now.
