Alcides Escobar

Alcides Escobar is a Venezuelan professional baseball infielder for the Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball (MLB). He previously played in MLB with the Milwaukee Brewers and Kansas City Royals and the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB).

He batted.263/.292/.350 last year. With 10 sacrifice hits, he once again topped the majors. On June 3, against Cleveland Indians pitcher Danny Salazar, Escobar recorded his 1000th career Major League hit.

The Royals exercised Escobar’s 2017 opt-out on October 10th, 2016. In 2017, the Royals paid him a reported $6.5 million. In 599 at-bats, he hit.250 with a slash line of.272/.357 and shared the major league lead with seven sacrifice hits.

His.272 on-base percentage and.357 slugging percentage was the lowest of any MLB batter who was eligible for the award. However, he was caught seven times out of his four base steals.

Escobar signed a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Royals on January 29, 2018. In 2018, he had a slash line of.231/.279/.313, which was a career-low. It was the second-worst slugging percentage in MLB history, at.313.

After signing a minor-league contract with the Baltimore Orioles on February 16, 2019, Escobar was invited to participate in the Orioles’ spring training camp. Escobar was granted his unconditional release from the Orioles on March 20, 2019.
