Bettinger came within a whisker of pitching a spotless first inning in Sunday’s 16-4 loss to the Dodgers at American Family Field, but instead matched the record for most earned runs ever allowed in a Major League debut.
Bettinger was instructed to “wear it” for four innings to protect the rest of the pitching staff, with the roster devastated by injuries and the Brewers on Day 10 of 17 consecutive game days.
In the opening two innings, he gave up grand slams in both innings, totaling 11 earned runs. Bettinger is only the second pitcher in MLB history to allow so many earned runs in his debut; the other was Arnie Muoz of the White Sox on June 19, 2004, against the Expos.
The Brewers took three of four games from the Dodgers in the series, despite falling behind 5-0 after one inning and 9-0 after two, and will travel to Philadelphia in the coming days, expecting Christian Yelich and Lorenzo Cain to return off the injured list.
