On March 19, 2019, the Astros signed Alex to a six-year contract extension worth $100 million, which will cover Alex’s entire arbitration eligibility period.
He hit 12 home runs in May, breaking a club record. He was named American League Player of the Month in August after hitting .404 with six home runs and 31 RBI in August.
Alex produced a .296/.423/.592 slash line with 41 home runs and 112 RBI in a season that saw him split between third base (99 games) and shortstop (65 games in the absence of Carlos Correa).
Aside from home runs and RBIs, he also ranked in the top five in slugging percentage and OPS. It was Alex who smashed the Tampa Bay Rays in the ALDS before cooling off in the ALCS and World Series’s opening two games.
He had a 3-for-5 night with a grand slam and 5 RBI in Game 4 of the Fall Classic, but the Astros lost in seven games. Bregman received a Silver Slugger and was named to the All-MLB squad’s second team.
He may have won the 2019 Most Valuable Player Award if he had played on a planet (or at the very least a league) without Mike Trout, but he finished second in voting by 20 points behind the Halos legend (355 to 335).
Celebrity guest picker Bregman represented LSU in “The Game” between the Tigers and the Crimson Tide on ESPN’s College GameDay on November 3, 2018.
He concluded with a 7-6 record despite picking several college football games against the picks of panel members Lee Corso, Desmond Howard, and Kirk Herbstreit.
